Top mountain west design firm takes older styles modern while honoring western spirit
Jackson Hole, Wyoming, May 22, 2018 – Log homes have been a familiar fixture in the Rocky Mountain West since turn-of-the-century homesteading days. But the recent rise in popularity of Mountain Modern architecture has left older log houses languishing, with prospective homeowners rejecting the style as dark and outdated. Still, especially where an older home has good bones and a sensible layout, there’s an opportunity to burnish the rustic charm while inviting a more sophisticated contemporary aesthetic, says Rush Jenkins, design director of Jackson Hole interior design studio WRJ Design. Jenkins and his partner and WRJ co-founder Klaus Baer have been helping clients renovate log homes to achieve a distinctive alpine elegance for years.
“It’s satisfying and fun to transform an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan,” Jenkins said in a recent interview on updating log homes for The Clear Creek Group Blog. “Log homes are a great way to begin with the traditional, and from there, make design decisions that incorporate a more current aesthetic. In doing so, you can get the best of what you might love about both.”
Darla Worden, editor in chief of Mountain Living magazine – which recently named WRJ Design to its ML List of Top Architects & Designers 2018 and has honored the firm with a Home of the Year win – sees the updating of log homes as a trending topic with the magazine’s readers. “We are seeing more renovations of log homes that were built in the '80s and '90s,” she says. “They are being refreshed by updating the logs: sandblasting old varnish or finishes and then refinishing through a number of processes including lacquer, stain and whitewash.”
WRJ’s Jenkins studied design in London and Japan and spent years in New York City as Sotheby’s Design Director before opening WRJ Design in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, with Baer. But the heartfelt tug of Western culture and traditions runs deep in Jenkins, who was born and raised on a farm in rural Idaho. “Working within the historic Western log vernacular is not just creatively fulfilling to me, it’s emotionally fulfilling as well,” he says.
“The log home evokes a very romantic notion of the West that harkens back to times gone by and original homesteads. At the same time,” he explains, “they can be challenging to live in because today we like living in light-filled homes with big open spaces, while log homes tend to be dark with a close in feeling. The great thing is that those issues can be addressed in a variety of ways.”
Some of WRJ Design’s favorite ways to update log homes?
Make the palette palatable: The orange and yellow tones in log walls, floors and trim have fallen out of favor. Refinish the highly glazed log walls and replace floors and trim with current options. Switch heavy, traditional and dark leather furnishings for clean-lined contemporary pieces in light colors.
Let there be light: Replace wooden windows with steel and double-paned glass; the rewards are twofold: bringing more light in, while achieving a Mountain Modern vibe that embraces daylight and views while keeping cold out.
Freshen fixtures and finishes: Update kitchens and baths with up-to-date finishes and sleek fixtures; use interesting tile and warm stone for natural materials with a modern aesthetic.
Straighten up: Choose crisp, clean lines in hardware, cabinetry and furnishings to offset logs’ visually dominant curves.
Get down to details: Carefully curate lighting, rugs, art and fabrics for drapes, throws and pillows to create finishing touches with subtle layers of texture and tone.

“Coava Coffee has direct relations with small rural growers, and the green wall suggests and reinforces the direct connection between Coava and the source farms,” said Mark Annen, AIA, NCARB, Annen Architecture and Design, the project architect. “In addition to expressing the Coava brand and creating captivating visual interest, the green wall fulfills an important architectural function.”
Annen explained that the upstairs section of the café has a low ceiling that hides the mechanicals. The space between the ceiling and the concrete floor could feel compressed. The green wall balances the weight of the concrete floor and ceiling, creating a sense of openness.
Don Trotter, owner of Oregon Restaurant Equipment, specializes in restaurant construction and equipment installation and served as the general contractor for the project. He was responsible for the selection and installation of the green wall system. “Price and ease of installation as a turnkey system were key factors in the specification of LiveWall,” he said.
“We trusted Don’s recommendation,” said Annen. “LiveWall looked to be a well-designed system that could be maintained under the demands of a commercial application. The hardware, planter hanging system, and irrigation lines are simple but solid in construction.”
“The living wall meets our expectations and has been well-received by our customers,” said Higgins. “When we look at customer reviews on social media, they include positive comments and photos of the green wall.”

Home Refinery’s Better Sleep Survey ran between March 1st and April 30th and received more than 500 responses from online readers. The stated goal of this survey was to “better elucidate the common lifestyle habits and preferences among those reporting higher quality sleep,” as described by a member of the Home Refinery Editorial team. Respondents were asked a series of questions through an online questionnaire ranging from their favorite type of mattress to the amount of exercise they participate in each week.
Mariella Gavin, a member of the Home Refinery’s editorial team, expressed her excitement over the sharing of the initial results from this survey.
“Our site has published a lot of mattress reviews in the past few months with the mission of helping consumers better understand their options. We felt that our focus on this subject matter still left a bit to be desired, concerning achieving our end goal of helping the average consumer find the best mattress possible, and the Better Sleep Survey was all about filling in the gaps. We’ve had the opportunity to review some of the best memory foam mattresses on the market, but that doesn’t necessarily mean everyone is going to sleep better with that choice. The Better Sleep Survey was about casting a wide net to understand better the common habits and preferences among people reporting the best sleep.”
Mariella shared some of the more interesting questions, along with their results, to offer a better insight into the nature of the Better Sleep Survey:
“We plan on really diving into the results over the next couple of months to better describe common habits that may impact sleep. These initial results are about sharing some of the more in-your-face type correlations we found. For example, we found that more than twenty percent of women reported having been turned-off by a low-quality mattress at some point in their lives! This question was added after some of our initial polling found several women expressing the connection between quality mattresses and their interest in sexual activity. Another set of results that shocked us were those describing the impact of children, the number of children to be specific, on quality of sleep. Our results showed that the total number of children didn’t have any significant influence on overall sleep quality. The one exception—those reporting five kids seem to be sleeping worse! We’re still trying to understand that result better.”
The Better Sleep Survey also consisted of several series of lifestyle, dietary, and health-related question sets. The HomeRefinery, having expressed an affinity for all things related to sleep, feels that current scientific research makes a strong case for connecting healthy lifestyle choices and overall sleep quality. Mariella expanded on the designer thinktank’s perspective on the topic:
“Our entire team has personal experiences that have shown us the impact that healthy lifestyle choices have on our overall quality of life. Eating non-processed food, exercising regularly, and getting an adequate amount of sleep are all pretty much no-brainers when it comes to feeling better. We wanted to try and get some better insights into the impact of less obvious lifestyle habits, personal preferences or life circumstances that may have a significant impact on overall well-being. A few questions that helped describe some more nuanced possibilities were those that inquired about our respondent’s use of dietary supplement sleep aids, favorite sleeping positions, allowance of pets in their beds, and their choice of ambient noise each evening. We all hold a strong belief that sleep is a core determinant of overall wellness. The Better Sleep Survey was designed to help better understand how one might get better sleep but with the true end goal of describing how one might feel better overall.”

The design of this showroom is a direct reflection of Paul’s passion for his product and DWA PLLC couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this exciting project”, states Ryan Kronbetter, Partner at DWA PLLC.
The design concept was to create a showroom that challenged the typical mattress buying experience. Typical mattress retail stores require 5,000 to 10,000 square feet to display the assortment of mattresses they carry. The three mattress types that iSense Sleep has developed can be displayed in a space as small as a 500 square feet area in a big box store or a stand-alone store as small as 1,000 square feet. The 2,000 square foot showroom space at World Market Center in Las Vegas allowed for plenty of space for the new display to take shape. The design concept of the new space was to immerse the customer in the experience they would get walking into a traditional retail store found in “Downtown Middle America”. This concept was captured by splitting the showroom into two primary spaces, the park or streetscape and the actual store.
Upon arriving at the showroom the customer enters through a park area featuring the iSense Sleep façade, a functioning bar, café and multiple false storefronts. Each storefront is unique in design and is expressed with the use of different material selections. The storefronts are complimented by an assortment of greenery ranging from small plants and shrubs to 10’-0” tall trees set on a base of synthetic grass. These subtle features were designed to heighten the senses and pique the interest of the customer for the true experience yet to come when they enter the iSense Sleep storefront.
With the iSense Sleep store being the most important part of the experience. “The goal was to create a bigger surprise at every corner”, as described by Kronbetter. Upon entering the store the customer is greeted by a receptionist and a 120” 4K video projected onto a translucent wall. Around the first corner are VR stations allowing the customer to experience the mattress features while being immersed in a fully vertical world with video and sound. Once the VR experience is completed you find yourself face to face with the mattresses that the entire experience has been based upon. The beds are displayed in floating canopies with accent colors matching the individual types they represent. After enjoying the three types of mattresses the experience is complete with a trip to the back of the suite where a private conference room is located to “seal the deal”.
