Top mountain west design firm takes older styles modern while honoring western spirit
Jackson Hole, Wyoming, May 22, 2018 – Log homes have been a familiar fixture in the Rocky Mountain West since turn-of-the-century homesteading days. But the recent rise in popularity of Mountain Modern architecture has left older log houses languishing, with prospective homeowners rejecting the style as dark and outdated. Still, especially where an older home has good bones and a sensible layout, there’s an opportunity to burnish the rustic charm while inviting a more sophisticated contemporary aesthetic, says Rush Jenkins, design director of Jackson Hole interior design studio WRJ Design. Jenkins and his partner and WRJ co-founder Klaus Baer have been helping clients renovate log homes to achieve a distinctive alpine elegance for years.
“It’s satisfying and fun to transform an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan,” Jenkins said in a recent interview on updating log homes for The Clear Creek Group Blog. “Log homes are a great way to begin with the traditional, and from there, make design decisions that incorporate a more current aesthetic. In doing so, you can get the best of what you might love about both.”
Darla Worden, editor in chief of Mountain Living magazine – which recently named WRJ Design to its ML List of Top Architects & Designers 2018 and has honored the firm with a Home of the Year win – sees the updating of log homes as a trending topic with the magazine’s readers. “We are seeing more renovations of log homes that were built in the '80s and '90s,” she says. “They are being refreshed by updating the logs: sandblasting old varnish or finishes and then refinishing through a number of processes including lacquer, stain and whitewash.”
WRJ’s Jenkins studied design in London and Japan and spent years in New York City as Sotheby’s Design Director before opening WRJ Design in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, with Baer. But the heartfelt tug of Western culture and traditions runs deep in Jenkins, who was born and raised on a farm in rural Idaho. “Working within the historic Western log vernacular is not just creatively fulfilling to me, it’s emotionally fulfilling as well,” he says.
“The log home evokes a very romantic notion of the West that harkens back to times gone by and original homesteads. At the same time,” he explains, “they can be challenging to live in because today we like living in light-filled homes with big open spaces, while log homes tend to be dark with a close in feeling. The great thing is that those issues can be addressed in a variety of ways.”
Some of WRJ Design’s favorite ways to update log homes?
Make the palette palatable: The orange and yellow tones in log walls, floors and trim have fallen out of favor. Refinish the highly glazed log walls and replace floors and trim with current options. Switch heavy, traditional and dark leather furnishings for clean-lined contemporary pieces in light colors.
Let there be light: Replace wooden windows with steel and double-paned glass; the rewards are twofold: bringing more light in, while achieving a Mountain Modern vibe that embraces daylight and views while keeping cold out.
Freshen fixtures and finishes: Update kitchens and baths with up-to-date finishes and sleek fixtures; use interesting tile and warm stone for natural materials with a modern aesthetic.
Straighten up: Choose crisp, clean lines in hardware, cabinetry and furnishings to offset logs’ visually dominant curves.
Get down to details: Carefully curate lighting, rugs, art and fabrics for drapes, throws and pillows to create finishing touches with subtle layers of texture and tone.
Ultimately, behind WRJ design decisions is always the goal of creating a serene and harmonious environment. Log homes can provide a relaxed luxury that tells a uniquely Western story. “Our clients trust us to find creative solutions that embrace the present,” affirms Jenkins, “but always with a respectful nod to the past.”

The Coava Coffee on Jefferson Street in Portland, Oregon Features a 95-Square-Foot Green Wall in the Café’s Upstairs Seating Area
Nunica, MI., May 22, 2018 - Coava Coffee went green at its new West Side location on Jefferson Street in Portland, Oregon with the installation of a LiveWall® Indoor Living Wall. An organic expression of Coava Coffee’s organic brand, the green wall is living artwork that attracts and engages customers as they enjoy their coffee in the café’s upper level seating area.
“Living walls, also called green walls, are structural systems that cover walls with growing plants. Living walls transform unadorned walls into vertical gardens,” said Dave MacKenzie, president, LiveWall, LLC. “In retail environments, living walls make interior spaces more appealing and relaxing.”
“We are not just selling top-tier specialty coffee. We are offering hospitality, creating a welcoming ambiance, where our customers feel like friends invited to hang out in our cafés,” said Matt Higgins, founder and president, Coava Coffee Roasters. “I had seen green walls in larger spaces, and that got me thinking about featuring a green wall as a unique living work of art our customers can experience as they enjoy a great cup of coffee with us.”
Completed in October 2017, the six-foot high vertical garden spans 17 feet along the back wall of the café’s upstairs seating area. In total, the green wall has 52 LiveWall modular planters with inserts that contain the growing medium and plants. Blossoms Floral, a full-service florist and design studio, provided and maintains the plants, a mix of more than 100 Pothos ‘Neon’ and Pothos ‘Silver Cloud’ plants arranged in a distinctive pattern of wide stripes in alternating dark and light green colors.
“Coava Coffee has direct relations with small rural growers, and the green wall suggests and reinforces the direct connection between Coava and the source farms,” said Mark Annen, AIA, NCARB, Annen Architecture and Design, the project architect. “In addition to expressing the Coava brand and creating captivating visual interest, the green wall fulfills an important architectural function.”
Annen explained that the upstairs section of the café has a low ceiling that hides the mechanicals. The space between the ceiling and the concrete floor could feel compressed. The green wall balances the weight of the concrete floor and ceiling, creating a sense of openness.
Don Trotter, owner of Oregon Restaurant Equipment, specializes in restaurant construction and equipment installation and served as the general contractor for the project. He was responsible for the selection and installation of the green wall system. “Price and ease of installation as a turnkey system were key factors in the specification of LiveWall,” he said.
“We trusted Don’s recommendation,” said Annen. “LiveWall looked to be a well-designed system that could be maintained under the demands of a commercial application. The hardware, planter hanging system, and irrigation lines are simple but solid in construction.”
“The living wall meets our expectations and has been well-received by our customers,” said Higgins. “When we look at customer reviews on social media, they include positive comments and photos of the green wall.”

Today, Coava Coffee has three locations in Portland and one in San Diego. Visit Coava online at http://www.coavacoffee.com. Better yet, stop by to visit us. The Better Sleep Survey details the impacts of lifestyle on sleep quality and offers insights into many often-overlooked influential factors. Among many interesting connections was the shocking revelation that 20% of women report having had their libido negatively affected by a low quality mattress.
MAY 22, 2018 - The Home Refinery has recently published the results of their Better Sleep Survey and is excited to share some of the more shocking results. Among many other questions, this survey describes the impact of physical exercise on sleep quality, how one’s children may impact sleep, and even how a quality mattress may improve your sex life! The initial results of this survey are available on the Home Refinery website here: https://www.homerefinery.com/better-sleep-survey/
Home Refinery’s Better Sleep Survey ran between March 1st and April 30th and received more than 500 responses from online readers. The stated goal of this survey was to “better elucidate the common lifestyle habits and preferences among those reporting higher quality sleep,” as described by a member of the Home Refinery Editorial team. Respondents were asked a series of questions through an online questionnaire ranging from their favorite type of mattress to the amount of exercise they participate in each week.
Mariella Gavin, a member of the Home Refinery’s editorial team, expressed her excitement over the sharing of the initial results from this survey.
“Our site has published a lot of mattress reviews in the past few months with the mission of helping consumers better understand their options. We felt that our focus on this subject matter still left a bit to be desired, concerning achieving our end goal of helping the average consumer find the best mattress possible, and the Better Sleep Survey was all about filling in the gaps. We’ve had the opportunity to review some of the best memory foam mattresses on the market, but that doesn’t necessarily mean everyone is going to sleep better with that choice. The Better Sleep Survey was about casting a wide net to understand better the common habits and preferences among people reporting the best sleep.”
Mariella shared some of the more interesting questions, along with their results, to offer a better insight into the nature of the Better Sleep Survey:
“We plan on really diving into the results over the next couple of months to better describe common habits that may impact sleep. These initial results are about sharing some of the more in-your-face type correlations we found. For example, we found that more than twenty percent of women reported having been turned-off by a low-quality mattress at some point in their lives! This question was added after some of our initial polling found several women expressing the connection between quality mattresses and their interest in sexual activity. Another set of results that shocked us were those describing the impact of children, the number of children to be specific, on quality of sleep. Our results showed that the total number of children didn’t have any significant influence on overall sleep quality. The one exception—those reporting five kids seem to be sleeping worse! We’re still trying to understand that result better.”
The Better Sleep Survey also consisted of several series of lifestyle, dietary, and health-related question sets. The HomeRefinery, having expressed an affinity for all things related to sleep, feels that current scientific research makes a strong case for connecting healthy lifestyle choices and overall sleep quality. Mariella expanded on the designer thinktank’s perspective on the topic:
“Our entire team has personal experiences that have shown us the impact that healthy lifestyle choices have on our overall quality of life. Eating non-processed food, exercising regularly, and getting an adequate amount of sleep are all pretty much no-brainers when it comes to feeling better. We wanted to try and get some better insights into the impact of less obvious lifestyle habits, personal preferences or life circumstances that may have a significant impact on overall well-being. A few questions that helped describe some more nuanced possibilities were those that inquired about our respondent’s use of dietary supplement sleep aids, favorite sleeping positions, allowance of pets in their beds, and their choice of ambient noise each evening. We all hold a strong belief that sleep is a core determinant of overall wellness. The Better Sleep Survey was designed to help better understand how one might get better sleep but with the true end goal of describing how one might feel better overall.”

Christie Brinkley's Hamptons mansion with century-old observation tower is for sale and featured this week at TopTenRealEstateDeals.com
POMPANO BEACH, Florida, (PRWEB)MAY 22, 2018 -
“Christie Brinkley's Tower Home”
America’s most popular supermodel, Christie Brinkley, has put her longtime Hamptons estate on the market asking $29.5 million. The 20-acre estate in Bridgehampton, called Tower Hill, is now far too large for empty nester Brinkley and though it was perfect for raising her daughters, it is no longer practical for a single woman with three children who are now young adults.
Like many celebrities who require safe places to park their wealth, Brinkley has invested in real estate, concentrating in the Hamptons at the tip of Long Island. She has been a resident there for years and though originally a California “surfer girl” as a youth, the 64-year-old “Uptown Girl” now calls the Hamptons home.
Named for the century-old observation tower that was built as part of the main house in 1891, Tower Hill is sited on more than 20 private open and wooded acres. The three-story traditional main house has six bedrooms and five and a half baths, while the guest house and artist’s studio add another two bedrooms and two baths totaling over 11,000 square feet of living space. Charmingly eclectic, the home is pure Christie - subtly sophisticated and at the same time whimsical. Included are a large country kitchen and family room, gym, office, four fireplaces, multiple stone terraces and a four-car heated garage. Grounds with rolling lawns, flower and organic vegetable gardens and walking trails also include a tennis court, pond and heated swimming pool. The property was totally restored in 1998 by Christie and her then husband - architect Peter Cook. Since the acreage is 200 feet above sea level, from the observation tower, one can see the Atlantic Ocean, the south shore of Connecticut, Gardiner’s Island, and the North Fork Peninsula.
Raised in Southern California, Christie Brinkley has lived what many would call a fairytale life beginning with her move to France after high school to study art. In 1973, celebrity photographer Errol Sawyer saw her in a Paris post office and connected her to the world of fashion modeling. She came to fame as a three-time Sports Illustrated cover girl and now, with over 30 years as one of America’s favorite models, a record stint as the Cover Girl pitch woman and lucrative endorsement deals for beauty products, wine and fitness equipment, Christie can afford to live wherever she wants.
Christie Brinkley is selling Tower Hill, her Bridgehampton family home of 15 years. The estate is listed by Enzo Morabito of Douglas Elliman. Priced at $29.5 million.

Presales of GroBox, the All-in-One, Plug-and-Play Indoor Hydroponic Greenhouse, Grow Beyond 750% of Kickstarter Goal
SAN DIEGO, February 2, 2018 - Support is growing dramatically for GroBox, an all-in-one, plug-and-play indoor hydroponic greenhouse, with crowdfunders pushing sales beyond $75,000 on Kickstarter– more than eight times higher than its original campaign goal.
Offering anyone the ability to grow their own plants conveniently in their own home, GroBox controls the watering schedules and air flow to grow plants faster than other methods while using two-thirds less water than traditional systems.
By using hydroponics technology that makes GroBox self-watering, sets watering cycles and manipulates the LED grow lights, users only change the water in GroBox a few times a month – skipping the guesswork for how often they should be watering their plants.
GroBox has also formulated a fertilizer solution so plants get the exact nutrients they need, providing clay pellets that replace messy soil and allow for even water distribution. The LED grow lights in GroBox also provide the lighting the plants need no matter the season or outside weather, and are also customizable for the specific growth phase for specific plants.
GroBox is easy to set up, as well. Users only need to:
• Add filtered water to fill line, then add in fertilizer
• Add clay pebble growing medium
• Add plant mediums and insert seeds (or clones)
• Set growing settings based on plants they are growing
From there, GroBox owners only sit back and watch their plants grow, changing the water inside only a few times a month. Plants can either be grown from seeds or clones.
GroBox was designed to make it easy for everyone, everywhere to grow their own plants in the convenience of their home, on their own time, and during any season. By growing their own plants, users also know exactly where they come from – assuring users that they are eliminating pesticides and other harmful chemicals from entering their bodies.
For more information about GroBox or to purchase the indoor hydroponic greenhouse at an early-bird discount during the final month crowdfunding, visit the GroBox campaign page on Kickstarter.
GroBox is a part of the sustainable gardening movement. We started with FogBox and have been innovating with incorporating sustainable agriculture methods into technology for years.
We want to help change how people think about their food -- where it comes from and what’s going into it. No toxins or pesticides, ever. Just plants.
Our mission is to become a part of the sustainable gardening movement and make it easier for people to grow their own plants, on their own time, anywhere, during any season.

Innovative Architecture Firm, DWA PLLC, Introduces Retailers to the Future of Bedding Showrooms at the Las Vegas Winter Market 2018
DWA PLLC of Las Vegas, Nevada just introduced the mattress industry to a new method of selling beds by designing and building the first ever experiential bedding showroom.
LAS VEGAS, February 3, 2018 - Innovative Architecture firm, DWA PLLC, introduces retailers to the future of bedding showrooms at the Las Vegas Winter Market 2018.
New mattress manufacturer iSense Sleep, just successfully launched the World’s First Adjustable Mattress line in Las Vegas at the Winter Market 2018. DWA PLLC from Las Vegas, NV was chosen to design the showroom because of their experience in the industry. "I knew about their reputation of building high quality retail spaces but I was energized with Ryan and his team’s enthusiasm for building something different". states Paul Longman, Founder and CEO of the iSense Sleep brand. "My goal was to improve the customer experience, instead of a traditional space we wanted our stand to control the sales process from start to finish and that uniqueness energized them'. “This exciting project has a been a collaborative effort. The design of this showroom is a direct reflection of Paul’s passion for his product and DWA PLLC couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this exciting project”, states Ryan Kronbetter, Partner at DWA PLLC.
The design concept was to create a showroom that challenged the typical mattress buying experience. Typical mattress retail stores require 5,000 to 10,000 square feet to display the assortment of mattresses they carry. The three mattress types that iSense Sleep has developed can be displayed in a space as small as a 500 square feet area in a big box store or a stand-alone store as small as 1,000 square feet. The 2,000 square foot showroom space at World Market Center in Las Vegas allowed for plenty of space for the new display to take shape. The design concept of the new space was to immerse the customer in the experience they would get walking into a traditional retail store found in “Downtown Middle America”. This concept was captured by splitting the showroom into two primary spaces, the park or streetscape and the actual store.
Upon arriving at the showroom the customer enters through a park area featuring the iSense Sleep façade, a functioning bar, café and multiple false storefronts. Each storefront is unique in design and is expressed with the use of different material selections. The storefronts are complimented by an assortment of greenery ranging from small plants and shrubs to 10’-0” tall trees set on a base of synthetic grass. These subtle features were designed to heighten the senses and pique the interest of the customer for the true experience yet to come when they enter the iSense Sleep storefront.
With the iSense Sleep store being the most important part of the experience. “The goal was to create a bigger surprise at every corner”, as described by Kronbetter. Upon entering the store the customer is greeted by a receptionist and a 120” 4K video projected onto a translucent wall. Around the first corner are VR stations allowing the customer to experience the mattress features while being immersed in a fully vertical world with video and sound. Once the VR experience is completed you find yourself face to face with the mattresses that the entire experience has been based upon. The beds are displayed in floating canopies with accent colors matching the individual types they represent. After enjoying the three types of mattresses the experience is complete with a trip to the back of the suite where a private conference room is located to “seal the deal”.
"DWA went above and beyond to help us, they participated in the entire journey to ensure our show experience was second to none." says Longman. "I look to working with at DWA for years to come."

Polaris brings an impressive new selection of kitchen quartz prefabs to start the new year with fresh designs.
Polaris brings an impressive new selection of kitchen quartz prefabs to start the new year with fresh designs.
LOS ANGELES, December 23, 2017 - Polaris Home Design is giving homeowners who want to redesign their kitchen this festive period and new year plenty of options with an impressive new selection of quartz prefabs.
Their showroom has grown by five quartz stone colors, which makes it one of the most extensive selections in North Hollywood. With beautiful shades and patterns like Nougat, Haze, Blizzard, and Quartz Reflections, there's bound to be something that everyone likes. For homeowners who find it hard to choose, a classic, timeless option like Pure White may fit perfectly with an existing color scheme.
According to a Polaris spokesperson: "Quartz is gaining in popularity among buyers, and for good reason. It's beautiful without being too overwhelming, and its durability makes it the perfect surface for countertops."
When it comes to kitchen remodeling, there's a lot of factors to tie in. Modern houses may require a sleeker, polished look, where a rustic home might need something to tie together the light, natural atmosphere. Quartz combines refined and earthy styles to make the most of any room. The kitchen is the heart of the home, so decorating it with attractive, natural materials is never a bad decision.
Polaris Home Design specializes in making sure that every one of their quartz prefabs lives up to the client's expectations, and the expertly processed countertops are customized according to the buyer. They're perfect for both indoor and outdoor use, and the wide range of color makes quartz one of the most versatile options for interior decorating.
Quartz is one of the hardest substances on Earth, and this gem-like stone is both stunning and sturdy. It's the ideal product for any kitchen counter, and its non-porous surface makes for easy cleaning. Polaris's kitchen quartz countertops require no sealing or polishing; once they're installed, they're ready for use. These quartz prefabs are also custom-cut to fit any counter, which makes buying easy.
Polaris is determined to make sure that the aesthetic of their product never falls flat. They process their quartz prefabs within their own facility, just to make sure that none of the natural beauty is ruined during the sizing. Whether the color scheme of a home is a modern, streamlined design or a more elegant display, a kitchen quartz countertop will quickly become the centerpiece of any kitchen.
Those who are ready to give their kitchen a makeover in 2018 can browse the new selection of kitchen quartz countertops in store or online. The holidays are never a bad time to begin thinking about home improvement, especially when Polaris has so much to offer.
