SOMERSET, N.J., March 18, 2014 - Last week, Ekornes Inc. underscored its commitment to sustainable production by teaming with House Beautiful and the Environmental Sustainable Furnishings Council for an event promoting the importance of eco-consciousness in the home furnishings industry.
Annually, organizations partner with House Beautiful in its color-themed chair hunt for consumers. This year, the theme was "The New Green," and numerous environmentally friendly brands donated chairs for the event. On March 14, New Yorkers competed to win the donated chairs, which were dropped in green spaces around the city. Ekornes gave away a luxury Stressless® Magic recliner in front of the Hearst Tower, New York City's first LEED Gold certified skyscraper.
"The theme of House Beautiful's Chair Chase was a perfect tie-in for Ekornes with our recent commitment to halogen-free manufacturing," said Beverly Kastel, marketing manager. "Through this special event, we were able share the luxury of our recliners while helping promote the importance of sustainable production in the furniture business."
Despite being in full regulation with flame retardant laws, Norwegian furniture manufacturer, Ekornes Inc. is removing Tris (1-chloro-2-prophyl) Phosphate, or TCPP from its Stressless® sofas, recliners and office chairs beginning this spring to complete the shift to halogen-free production. The luxury brand will now manufacture all foam for its Stressless® product lines using the flame retardant melamine. Containing only hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, melamine is completely harmless to consumer health, and maintains a high melting point for fire safety purposes.
"Although Stressless seating is already nontoxic and perfectly safe for consumers, the next step as a company is to transition to halogen-free manufacturing," said Peter Bjerregaard, president of Ekornes Inc. "As a socially responsible organization, it is a switch we are proud and excited to make for customers."
