Furniture brand Oficina Inglesa are happy to announce the launch of their new collection of beautifully-handcrafted extending dining tables.
London, UK, November 12, 2014 - Specialising in traditional pieces, the London-based company offer their new selection of tables in a choice of woods ranging from French cherry and French oak, to American Walnut and Mahogany. Each table in the range - Regency, Pigalle, Fabrice and La Villette - is completely handcrafted in Oficina Inglesa’s own workshop by their artisans.
The designs are influenced by traditional French styles such as Louis XV, Louis XVI, Directoire or Empire and are revisited for a modern day living.
Oficina Inglesa specialises in creating bespoke pieces of furniture and all items from their collection are made to order. The new tables are available with one or more extension leaves and will flexibly adapt to any occasion. Clients are welcome to commission any piece according to their requirements of size and design.
Director Eduardo Alves says: “Clients will always love the idea of bespoke furniture. It’s not just about being able to choose a favourite wood, or to get the right size so that it’s a perfect fit for the room. Rather, it’s also about having a piece that is custom-built specially and owning what is, in effect, a unique and beautiful piece of furniture which is a one-off.”
“And unlike modern factory-produced tables, the handmade furniture produced at Oficina Inglesa is built to last. This is thanks to the use of traditional techniques which have been passed on through generations of craftsmen.”
Oficina Inglesa is based in Islington, London. Clients can schedule a visit in their showroom, where they are welcome to go through a range of materials and discuss their bespoke items with an in-house designer. Offering could raise $380 million for parent company
By Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today
TORONTO, Oct. 3, 2014 - The parent company of Sears Canada has announced it will divest itself of as many as 40 million common shares of its beleaguered subsidiary through a rights offering that could raise as much as $380 million.
If successful, the offering would reduce Sears Holdings Corp.’s stake in the multi-channel Canadian retailer from 51% to about 12%. Once the offering is completed, Sears Holdings will hold about 12 million shares in Sears Canada valued at about $135 million.
Some analysts have noted that by selling the shares in Sears Canada to its own shareholders, Sears Holding will raise much-needed cash to aid it as it readies to compete in the upcoming and vital holiday shopping season. They also observed that Sears Holdings appears to have been unsuccessful in its efforts to sell Sears Canada, an effort it launched in May.
In a statement, Sears Holdings said the rights will be tradable and can be used to buy Sears Canada shares at $10.60 each — a slight discount from Wednesday’s closing price of $11.12 on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Each shareholder Sears Canada will receive the right to purchase one additional share for each share already held.
Sears Canada is controlled by U.S. hedge fund magnate Edward Lampert through by Sears Holdings and ESL Investments, a private company he controls.
Sears Holdings has said it expects at least $168 million in proceeds in mid-to-late October, with the rest by early November. Lampert and ESL have told Sears they intend to exercise their option to acquire a proportional amount of the subscription rights.
As part of the process, Sears Canada will also apply to be listed on the NASDAQ Global Select Market, where the rights will be traded. Sears Holdings is also listed on the NASDAQ.
Sears Canada has released its own statement, saying it intends to cooperate fully with the plan and it intends to file a prospectus with all Canadian securities regulatory authorities. It will also file a registration statement with the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission.
In a related announcement, Sears Canada said that in connection with the rights offering, Sears Holding has agreed to extend its license to use the “Sears” name and certain other brand names such as Kenmore appliances, Sears-O-Pedic mattresses and Craftsman tools.
Under the new agreement, Sears Canada will continue to hold rights to the brands on a royalty-free basis as long as Sears Holdings continues to own 10% of its voting shares — down from the prior 25%. The rights will continue to be held royalty-free should Sears Holdings completely divest itself of Sears Canada for a period of five years, up from the current three years. And, should Sears Canada believe a further transition period is needed, it will be granted for a further four years, at a below market rate.
It’s no secret Sears Canada is struggling to regain its leadership position on this country’s retail scene. It has declared a loss in nine of the last 14 fiscal quarters, despite selling a number of key assets during that time. For the best part of the past two decades, Sears Canada has been this country’s dominant purveyor of furniture, mattresses and major appliances and its hold on these categories has been shaky for the past while.
Last week, Douglas Campbell announced he will resign as president and CEO of Sears Canada before the end of 2014, after only a year in the post.
Designer brand will include upholstery, case goods, accent furniture
This article was originally published at Home Accents Today.
Oct. 1, 2014 - Rug and furniture manufacturer Safavieh has launched a new designer furniture line. Named Safavieh Couture, the new wholesale collection will be shown for the first time during the upcoming October High Point Market.
Seventy-five pieces representative of the 500-SKU introductory line will be displayed, including Safavieh Couture upholstery, case goods and accent furniture, with styles ranging from contemporary to transitional to traditional. Safavieh-branded rugs and lighting will also be on display in the showroom (Suite 117 in Historic Market Square), which has been redesigned for market.
“The new Couture furniture line is the next step in our effort to diversify our wholesale business with total home decorating solutions,” said Arash Yaraghi, a Safavieh principal. “At the request of interior designers and retail customers across the country, we are now bringing to market nationally the upscale private label furniture that has previously been sold exclusively through our retail stores in the metropolitan New York region.”
Safavieh Couture sofas retail from $1,995 and upholstered queen beds at $1,895. Most of the collection is produced in China and Vietnam. “There is no one ‘Safavieh Couture’ style,” according to a brand statement from the company. “Instead, we focus on exquisite details such as metallic, hand-rubbed and faux finishes. Our fabrics are timeless and classic: natural leathers and animal hides, organic linen, and luxurious silks and velvets, but they are also fashion-forward in color and design. We use beautifully grained marble, fine and repurposed woods, forged iron, all worked by master craftsmen.”
“Owning retail galleries in Manhattan, Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut afforded a unique opportunity to test market all types of furniture and accessories, and we learned from experience what sells to the urban sophisticate versus the casual suburban consumer,” said Michael Yaraghi, president of Safavieh Home Furnishings, noting that the retail group began producing private label furniture in 1986, initially focusing on traditional French and English designs made in Europe. “As our customers’ styling preference skewed more toward transitional and contemporary styles, we expanded into those categories with production in Asia as well.” Michael Yaraghi has directed design and production of the collection since its inception.
For the new wholesale brand, sales and production will now be handled by Darioush Yaraghi, general manager for Safavieh Couture.
“Our product development and design benefit greatly from feedback from the affluent consumers and interior designers who patronize our stores,” he said. “And on the wholesale side, we have an edge because of our strength in logistics, and our distribution centers strategically placed in California, Georgia, Pennsylvania and New York. While furniture, decorative accessories and rugs branded with the Safavieh label are all drop-shippable, the Couture line will be offered exclusively with white glove delivery.”
Safavieh has added numerous product categories over the last several years, most recently adding decorative throws to its offerings earlier this month at the New York Home Fashions Market.
LARCHMONT , New York, Sept. 28, 2014 - (ArtfixDaily.com) The new fall Versace collection may be on everyone’s wish list in the fashion world, but the old Versace collection is the main focus of the auction world on September 28th, thanks to Clarke Auction.
Clarke Auction will feature many lots of furniture and decorative arts from the Gianni Versace collection, originally sold through Sotheby’s in several important sales throughout the 2000s. The importance of the collection has not diminished, as this particular segment was not available to the market since the original sale. The range of the collection, from antique through deco to decorative, speaks to the opulence that the Versace name instills.
The featured lots of furniture include several bronze mounted antique Thormire quality pieces, including an exquisite and large mounted and gilt decorated Empire Mahogany cheval mirror estimated at a modest $2,000/$3,000, a beautiful bronze mounted antique Continental expanding center table with high quality Dore ram’s heads to be sold at an estimate of $2,000/$3,000, as well as several finely executed mahogany and bronze mounted consoles estimated at $1,000/$1,500 for a single and pair respectfully.
The craftsmanship in the bronze work and classical design of the mountings on the furniture is also displayed through several mahogany and bronze mounted beds that range in estimate from $600/$900 to $800/$1,200 each. Clarke will also feature a set of 14 Empire style bronze mounted dining chairs to be listed at $2,000/$3,000, and pair of Deco framed zebra upholstered chairs for $1,000/$1,500.
The spectrum of quality furniture does not rest merely on antiques. The collection travels beyond the traditional to bring specialty to the ordinary. An amazing pair of large upholstered armchairs and ottomans will also be featured. While upholstered and more contemporary furniture may seem ordinary, it becomes more than special when covered in an unbelievable Versace silk. The pair once brought huge prices at auction, but they will be estimated as representatives of a changed market for $600/$900 together.
Also in the realm of extrodinary is a oversized concert grand piano by Bluthner to be sold for an estimated $3,000/$5,000.
Besides furniture, the multitude of decorative arts is an exemplary branch of the collection. A 19th century bronze Athenienne on gray marble base ($1,000/$1,500) is singularly a microcosm of the nature of the full decorative art collection. It continues with a Dore ram’s head mounted tri-leg pedestal with marble top to be offered at a $800/$1,200 estimate, as well as a large contemporary bronze urn with snake form handles. There will also be several lots of marble relief plaques and busts the classical style.
The collection also features many important works of fine art including a large pair of ink drawings by Luigi Ademollo which will be offered at $2,000/$3,000 as a lot, a large pair of allegorical oil paintings depicting Clemence and Strength with a $3,000/$5,000 estimate for both, and a Henry Moore lithograph to be offered at an estimate of $800/$1,200 on September 28th.
Chinese and Asian works, while not predominant in the collection, still remain important in the market today and will represent the Versace collection with a Palace sized Famille Verte vase listed with a conservative $800/$1,200 estimate alongside a pair of large Japanese tessellated decorative urn style objects to be sold for $600/$900.

Hadley Court Center can connect people around the world
Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, September 26, 2014
HIGH POINT — The Bernice Bienenstock Furniture Library has a new resource for global design collaboration and education, a high-tech meeting room called the Hadley Court Center for Design Collaboration.
The space on the ground floor of its library at 1009 N. Main St. here is open for use by designers, students, manufacturers, academics and civic and cultural organizations. The equipment allows participants to connect with anyone, anywhere in the world, to share a collaborative experience via LiveStream video and audio.
The center will be dedicated at a talk, “Collaboration in Design,” to be delivered at 4 p.m. Oct. 17 by international designer Mary Douglas Drysdale.
“It is our intention to make The Furniture Library accessible to anyone who has an interest in design, collaboration and connection regardless of where they live or work,” said Russell Bienenstock, president of the library’s board of directors.
Bienenstock said the center’s intended uses include moderated events, design meetings, seminars, product launches, Livestream webinars, the library’s new speaker series and brainstorming sessions. It can also be used as a satellite meeting room for furniture companies or community groups that need a place to congregate in High Point during or between markets and that need to be in instant visual contact with their national or global customers or employees.
He said Karla Teague Webb, the library’s director, has been trained in how to use the center’s audio and video equipment.
The center was made possible by the donation of Leslie Hendrix Wood, an interior decorator in Midland, Texas, and founder of lifestyle and interior design blog Hadley Court, whose content focuses on designing, celebrating, entertaining, organizing, traveling and giving.
“The furniture and design industries are fortunate to have an invaluable resource like the Bienenstock Furniture Library. The library is an integral part of preserving the history of furniture design for future generations,” Hendrix Wood said.
“Hadley Court is honored to be able to be a part of making the library accessible to anyone and offering technology where collaborative efforts can be fostered. The best designs are practical and come from the heart. What’s most important are relationships and new technological tools that have the potential to connect like-minded souls across the world.”

The Top 100 company acquired the lease on Carl’s former 60,000-square-foot showroom headquarters located in Coconut Creek with plans to reopen as Havertys Furniture in December after completing all renovation works of the said showroom.
In Fort Lauderdale, Havertys also signed a lease for the former 50,000-square-foot Carl’s Furniture store projected to be open next spring, said Clarence Smith, Havertys chairman, president and CEO.
Both will be a significant additions to the retailer’s store count. Havertys already operates a Fort Lauderdale store in the Sawgrass area, Smith said, noting that the new store would brings it closer to the coast, in a central area. Acquiring the Fort Lauderdale store will become three former Carl’s stores that Haverty’s will operate in the Southeast Florida because “we also took over the Boca (Raton, Fl.) Carl’s a couple of years ago,” Smith said.
He though declined to disclose sales projections for the new stores.
Carl’s, once a Top 100 company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2011 and emerged a year later, but eventually only to liquidate all its remaining three stores.
Havertys is listed at No. 15 on Furniture/Today’s Top 100 with sales of $746.1 million in furniture, bedding and accessories last year in its 119 stores. The company has made plans to open six more stores in existing markets this year with the coconut Creek store as part of its growth, including the projected three relocations, Smith said.
Havertys already relocated its Fayetteville, N.C., store and is also in the process of moving to a new Winston-Salem, N.C., location in a former Sports Authority space near its existing showroom. The third plan relocation will be in Kissimmee, Fla., to commence in a month’s time.
In the fall, the retailer will open a new store in the Buckhead area of Atlanta - a smaller-format 23,000-square-foot store, in a space it occupied years ago, Smith said.

San Francisco, Ca, July 26, 2014 - The Futon Shop celebrates 38 years of being in business with their Anniversary Futon Sale. The Futon Shop has been around since 1976 as a Family owned California mom and pop shop, which has grown from a few handmade futon mattresses a month, to shipping around the United States over 33 different kinds of futon mattresses.
The Futon Shop futon mattresses were sold by word of mouth in the beginning and the desire to sleep on natural fibers was a growing movement. In California there was a large population of naturalists wanting to sleep and eat all natural and from the Earth.
Around 1979 The Diamonds moved to San Francisco from Los Angeles with the grand opening of their first store in San Anselmo. The name, The Futon Shop, began at this location and people around the bay area started flocking to the shop that sold natural bedding without any chemicals.
About a year after an increase in customers requesting for more futons, The Futon Shop starting purchasing futon frames for their mattresses. And so began the transforming couch to bed Futon sofa bed that William Brower Developed. William Brower, a Boston Architect designed a black walnut hardwood futon frame that transformed into three parts. This is what we call a loveseat presently. This beautifully functional piece of art and furniture design was displayed in the Arts and Craft Museum of Modern Art in New York. The functionality and comfort of futons took off and The Futon Shop opened their first selling showroom in San Rafael, California. The Diamonds needed to open a warehouse in Corte Madera California to keep up with the high demand of loyal customers because the demand for futons became a highly demanded piece of furniture.
Over the Past few decades, The Futon Shop has sold to families all around the nation. Countless stories are told to salespeople throughout the years about grandchildren bringing in their grandparents, sisters bringing in their nephews for dorm furniture, families purchasing beds for their next vacation in their home in the mountains. The stories are endless and The Futon Shop wants to thank all the Futon staff and the customers that have shown loyalty to a local family business with abundant appreciation.
The Diamonds have smiles on their faces looking back on the great memories of building some of the most comfortable futons, building strong relationships with vendors, and meeting so many great people as they walked into the shops looking for a quality bed without any toxins.
The Futon Shop continues to grow and create the best organic furniture, and is committed to creating an open conversation about knowing what is inside their furniture with their customers.
